Comcast announced that its latest xFi Advanced Gateway includes Wi-Fi 6E, which uses the newly available spectrum to deliver faster, more reliable wireless broadband at home.

The device is Comcast’s most powerful home Internet gateway, offering boost boost at home with three Wi-Fi bands: 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and a new 6 GHz band. The company made the announcement at the CES 2022 Tech Trade Show in Las Vegas.

The offer is important because cable companies will soon be under pressure from mobile phone service providers for 5G wireless networks, and that will push up network prices and make faster internet available to more people.

Together, these Wi-Fi bands reduce interference and triple the bandwidth in the home to support the flow of connected devices used by consumers today. The gateway is also Comcast’s first to support symmetrical gigabit speeds – to power connected homes in the future.

“Next-generation gateways support our commitment to providing the best full-house WiFi experience with the fastest speed, ultimate control, advanced cybersecurity and comprehensive coverage at home,” Comcast Cable CEO Dave Watts said in a statement. “We are also making the latest advances in WiFi available to our customers today, so that their home networks are ready for all WiFi 6E enabled devices reaching the shelves in the future.”

During an epidemic, this type of anticipation is required. People have to rely on shared Wi-Fi to work from home, meet friends and relatives on video calls, stream movies, shop online, exercise, play games and order food.

The latest Wi-Fi is clearly built in the 6GHz band on the 6E standard. The Wi-Fi 6E adds more than twice the bandwidth of a 6GHz Wi-Fi band, eliminating interference and congestion problems in the 5GHz Wi-Fi band. And it enables multi-gigabit Wi-Fi speeds for connected Wi-Fi 6E devices.

The older WiFi 5 (802.11ac) and WiFi 6 (802.11ax) gateways use 2.4GHz and 5GHz radio frequencies to transmit data wirelessly to homes, businesses and schools. Wi-Fi 6E extends the standard to accommodate 14 adjacent 80MHz channels and 7 adjacent 6GHz frequencies with 7 additional 160MHz channels.

Wi-Fi 6E is capable of double connection simultaneously. And it delivers multigigabit upload and download speeds to help every game console, streaming TV, VR headset, laptop and more achieve the required speed.

Of course, for sports, latency is a big problem. Comcast said users will see fewer lag times for those moments when response time is as important as playing video games, virtual reality or video conferencing.

Customers who lease xFi Advanced Gateway receive a full suite of commendable services and products, including WiFi controls to manage device access, set parental controls, and pause Wi-Fi. Comcast also has xFi Advanced Security, which helps protect all connected devices at the gateway level from malware and other cyber security threats.

Customers can also get optional Wi-Fi extensions called xFi Pods to extend Wi-Fi coverage to hard-to-reach corners of the home.

The xFi Advanced Gateway will begin rolling out in the coming months for customers who subscribe to Gigabit Internet or the full xFi package.
