Tom Holland, the star of Sony’s billion-dollar film Spider-Man: No Way Home, came on stage at Sony’s CES 2022 event to discuss his upcoming uncharted film. And he showed a scene from the movie that was like a live action role-playing (LARP) game.
Holland and Mark Wahlberg are in the lead roles in this film based on Sony’s uncharted series with the characters of Nathan Drake and Victor “Sully” Sullivan. The filmed action scene featured a familiar scene from Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception players, while Nathan Drake falls off a plane.
“We didn’t want to lose the essence of the game,” Holland said in a conversation with Tom Rothman, CEO of Sony Pictures, on stage at the Sony booth at the convention center in Las Vegas. “He has a lot of heart. It respects sports, and it gives fans something new to enjoy. “
While I’m making fun of a scene like LARP, I think this is going to be a great movie and it’s a big event. It’s a sign of what I call “reverse transmedia.” Generally, transmedia means that a big movie will be translated into another medium such as comics, books or games. But in this age, the most powerful intellectual properties are born in sports, and the movie-going audience is full of games. And so sports-born ideas mean taking on movies and TV shows. Sony is well on the road with this strategy.

Naughty Druckman, co-head of Naughty Dog, also came out to talk about how true the film’s story is. He said that Sony is also excited to work on a TV show based on The Last of Us, which is another big hit of Naughty Dog.
On top of that, Sony is making a film based on Sony’s hit Ghost of Sushima game. Rothman said the uncharted movie is the “next big swing” after Spider-Man.
Holland said he played games during downtime on the movie set and he fell in love with the games and wanted to make a movie based on Uncharted. He and the filmmakers had to build bridges with the game’s developers to make sure they didn’t lose the essence of the game, Holland said. In this film, Nathan Drake is in his 20s, he is younger than him in sports.
There is a lot of action in this scene, where, in a single shot, he shows Holland fighting in a cargo plane with his back door open, flying high. It is pulled by some cargo boxes and hung on a rope. He climbs back up, just to escape by the car exiting the plane. He then jumps into the air chasing someone who promises to save him. It’s a very crazy action like the original scene of the game.
Hollande said it was the most difficult action scene ever.
Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida kicked off the event by saying that the company continues to provide grants from its 2020 100 million Social Justice Fund, established in June 2020, to address criminal justice reform, civic and community engagement, and access to education.
