Remember a handful of years ago when, all of a sudden, VR was a brand new thing and the future looked bright? Every news coming out of VR space was thrilling. Technology, even raw and impure, beggarly belief. Every testimonial of those who finally tried it was the same, “You have to try it.”
The wildest part is that, if you want to get into VR, for the longest time, there was only one option. There was a system to deal with if someone was going to get on a VR train. This meant that, basically, everyone would use the same hardware, run the same software, work in the same virtual space.
In 2012, Palmer Lucky demonstrated its Oculus Rift prototype at E3. The Kickstarter campaign was a huge success. Pledges over a certain amount offer a real development kit as a reward. For a while, virtual reality was synonymous with the Oculus Rift. A few years later, Facebook bought Oculus.
Then another company put the headset and their own store. Then another company did the same. These days there are enough competitive VR systems to run the top 10 list of the best, with plenty left for editors to cut. Efforts such as the Open Source Virtual Reality Project and the Revive Compatibility Layer make the software cross-compatible, but more rigorous than ever before.
2nd Annual GamesBeat and Facebook Gaming Summit and GamesBeat: Into the Metavers 2
VR went from one thing that we would all use together to innovation for a fraction of the gamers. That short-lived dream of a unified platform lasted long enough to get out behind the shed.
Congratulations to the winner
So, anyway, here is the 2021 award for that one quote Every Remembrance from Far Cry 3, brought to you by the Insanity DLC of Far Cry 6. The big winner of this year is the concept of Metavers. Did you just read that whole preface? Remove every mention of VR from it and replace it with ‘The Metavers’. That timeline of events? A few word changes and a few different hyperlinks fix it. Of course there are other examples that can be slotted instead of VR or Metaverse. There will be more examples in the future.
