The Game Awards 2021 hits a record 85M livestream views

Game Awards 2021 set a new record of 85 million livestream views for the December 9 broadcast of its awards and game announcements.

The eight-year-old video game celebration took place face-to-face at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles with a much smaller crowd than in 2019, the most recent previous personal show. But it topped the global livestream record of 83 million views last year. The online growth rate increased to 84% in 2020, but the 2.4% growth this year reflects the growth of gaming as the epidemic boom hit the peak.

Nevertheless, the show has seen stunning growth since its first web-based event in 2014, when it received 1.9 million views. And it tells you how much gaming and game culture has evolved in the meantime.

It featured The Matrix Resurrection stars Keenu Reeves and Kerry Ann-Moss, Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz, Guillermo del Toro, Hidio Kojima, Simu Liu, Ming-na Wen, Giancarlo Esposito and more.

It also had an all-digital, non-friction approach to global distribution. On Twitter, The Game Awards delivered a record-setting 1.6 million tweets about the event in 2021. Show trend number. For the 8th year in a row, 1 in the world, commands 11 of the top 30 worldwide trends in conversation.

With YouTube, the official livestream set a new record for viewing time with over 1.75 million hours of viewing on the main feed (no co-streams included), 14% more than the record-setting livestream of 2020.

And on Twitch, The Game Awards distributed 3.35 million unique viewers across all participating channels, including co-streams.

In China, The Game Awards reached new audiences with double-digit growth on platforms including Bilibili, Duo, Hua and Tencent Video.

Official fan voting for the awards has increased by 27% over a year ago to over 23.2 million on and Bilibili in China.

“We are grateful that we were able to return to the individual event in 2021 and continue to build on our success in 2021 with significant international growth,” Geoff Kegley, creator of The Game Awards, said in a statement.

Won a total of three awards, including Hazelight Studios’ It Takes to a Game of the Year. Forza Horizon 5 from Xbox Game Studio and Playground Games, Best Sports / Racing Game, Innovation in Accessibility and Best Audio Design, and Deathloop from Bethesda and Arken Studios won Best Game Direction and Best Art Direction.

This time the show also featured immersive formats, including Horizon Venues in VR, performances in Cinemark theaters, and a “metavars” experience in Menticor’s core online gaming world.

Game Awards also released a list of its second annual Future Class, made up of 50 talented individuals from around the world who represent the bright, bold and inclusive future of video games. The Game Awards Future Class featured a diverse group of builders, thinkers and dreamers, whose voices enhance and diversify the gaming art form and whose passion strengthens the industry.
