Tumblr is at war with Apple over ‘mature’ content on its app again

Tumblr Restricted Tags

Tumblr users who want to view adult content on the platform should avoid the iOS app because the company says it hides “sensitive content” so as not to infringe on Apple’s sensitivities.

“To be available in the Apple App Store,” says Tumblr, “we need to expand the definition of sensitive content and its accessibility to complete its guidelines.” Apple is available.

The company says it will “mark as clear” and display the above overlay when “you see search results or tags for specific words or phrases”.

However, users will have to guess what leaked because Tumblr will not disclose this information “currently”.

It may not be difficult to guess what leaked, but the new definition of “sensitive content” is more than some might expect.

Tumblr says that users can “see” that:

  • Images they don’t follow can’t be viewed in the app they receive via Blog Direct messages.
  • Clearly marked blogs are hidden from likes and reblog notes.
  • The images of the reblog appearing in the post notes are blurry unless you follow the image adder Tumblr.
  • Your dashboard (“Next” and “Content for you” tabs), search results, and tag results will no longer display content containing certain words or phrases.
  • Some words and phrases have been removed from the search (sometimes called search suggestions).
  • We exclude blogs from search results and tags that may contain or create sensitive content.

These changes were implemented with the release of Tumblr version 22.1 in the App Store.

The company says it will not display this overlay to users of its Android app or mobile website. It only extends its control over sensitive content to comply with Apple’s guidelines.
